There’s a ton of truly accomplished and imaginative music coming out of Oklahoma, as evidenced by the extensive list of top-notch releases that have already come out this year. But according to a recently released Spotify study, most Oklahomans simply don’t give a shit.
The streaming music service/aspiring sociologist has been putting out these biweekly playlists that tell you what the most unique songs are to various cities across the world, and the results usually consist of artists who hail from the region. For instance, our friends across the pond in London have been bumping lots of Krept and Wolf Alice, while Louisville has been rocking out to My Morning Jacket and Sturgill Simpson. So what music is Oklahoma listening to that others aren’t? Christian rock and Red Dirt, mostly.
Spotify’s Oklahoma City playlist is rife with songs by Stoney LaRue, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Turnpike Troubadours, and, um, LifeChurch.tv Worship, while Tulsa’s is rife with, well, much of the same. In fact, combing through these playlists, each 100 songs apiece, yields little to brag about. There’s a Third Eye Blind song on the OKC offering (I guess they’re OK?), a couple John Moreland songs on Tulsa’s (yeah, he’s good), and plenty of Kacey Musgraves (who we actually like, dammit) on both. But aside from that, we don’t advise listening to these unless you’re a glutton for punishment. Maybe we just haven’t given Third Day or Hillsong United enough of a shot.
Check out the playlists below. We also embedded the map, so feel free to peruse that too so you can be jealous of other cities.
