It’s the Fourth of July, motherfuckers, which means you blow shit up, eat your body weight in grilled meat, and bang your head to the loudest, Van Halen-screeching guitar riffs you can find. Well, the concerts coming to Oklahoma this week might not be quite that ‘Merica-tastic (color me surprised that Ted Nugent doesn’t have a standing, Trans-Siberian Orchestra-like early July date in Oklahoma), but there are plenty of blunts to be rolled, tears to be shed, and still more blunts to be rolled with the best concerts happening in the Sooner State this week.
Power Pyramid with Galactique and Tonne
Thursday, July 2
51st Street Speakeasy | Oklahoma City
These are some of our favorite Oklahoma artists, sure, but Tonne passing out free merch to anyone who carries in a torched/otherwise destroyed Confederate flag is the most patriotic thing any band is doing all week.
Code Orange with The Tooth and Convert
Sunday, July 5
89th Street Collective | Oklahoma City
This is an early show. And by early show we mean early show. It starts at 3 p.m., which is perfect for the sensible punk fan (and something this 26-year-old in a 48-year-old’s body can get behind).
311
Monday, July 6
Diamond Ballroom | Oklahoma City
Finally, it’s time. The occasion to bust out that puka shell necklace that has been gathering dust in the storage container lodged somewhere deep in your parents’ cellar since 2003 is finally here.
Jason Isbell with John Moreland
Monday, July 6
Cain’s Ballroom | Tulsa
One of Americana’s finest artists steps into the most historic venues for a marriage that is about as perfect as they come. John Moreland opens, in case you needed anymore incentive to go.
Dashboard Confessional and Third Eye Blind
Tuesday, July 7
Zoo Amphitheatre | Oklahoma City
The perfect post-Fourth of July purge is a three-hour crying session, courtesy of two of the most tear-inducing artists of the ’90s and ’00s, respectively.
Weed with Sun Vow, Cherry Death and Power Pyramid
Tuesday, July 7
The Shop | Oklahoma City
In case a rogue bottle rocket didn’t deafen you over the weekend, here’s your second chance at permanent hearing loss (with less of a chance of appendage explosions).
Natural Child with Hey Judy and Dead Shakes
Tuesday, July 7
Fur Shop | Tulsa
It comes through three days late, but to catch Burger Records’ own Natural Child and their jangly ’70s garage-rock riffs in a little DIY spot like the Fur Shop is my version of the American dream.
