We took a break from this feature last week because our curated show at H&8th was obviously the best thing going, but we’re back once again with a truly stacked bill of shows in both the OKC metro and Tulsa. With everything from long-awaited Oklahoma debuts to regional tour kickoffs, here are the must-see gigs to check out over the next several days.
Tyler, the Creator with Taco
Thursday, June 4
Diamond Ballroom | Oklahoma City
Sunday, June 7
Cain’s Ballroom | Tulsa
The Odd Future ringleader (er, former ringleader?) makes two appearances in Oklahoma after never even setting foot in the state. Oh, and his concerts are notoriously batshit nuts. He, too, is batshit nuts. Whether that amounts to something good is up for debate, but no matter your feelings on the rapper/producer/overgrown teenager, you sure as hell can’t ignore him.
Admirals with Moongiant
Thursday, June 4
51st Street Speakeasy | Oklahoma City
Stillwater-based indie-rockers Admirals are joining forces with OKC-based J. Crew models … I mean dream-poppers Moongiant for what should be an intoxicating showcase of local talent.
¿Que Pasa? with Yves and Organi5m
Thursday, June 4
Dope Chapel | Norman
It’s not easy to stick out in a city as music-rich as Austin, but ¿Que Pasa? are doing just that, and they’re doing it with instantly memorable, punk-informed melodies and a reputation for raucous live performances. That’s what’s up.
Huey Lewis and the News
Friday, June 5
Brady Theater | Tulsa
Come on now.
Junebug Spade with Softaware and King Latifah
Saturday, June 6
HiLo Club | Oklahoma City
OKC alt-rock mainstays Junebug Spade recently opened for Built to Spill (something they’ve done numerous times, actually) and are on the verge of finishing their first full-length album. The Colin Nance-led Softaware and Brennan Barnes (Deerpeople)-led King Latifah round out a quality bill for what should be a jam-packed HiLo.
Elms with Moon Bombs, The Notionaries and Beach Language
Saturday, June 6
Kamp’s Lounge | Oklahoma City
With a Norman Music Festival Main Stage appearance in their rear-view mirror and a Center of the Universe gig on the horizon, OKC earth-rock act Elms have momentum on their side. When you have talented singer-songwriter Chelsey Cope helming the stage, it’s easy to see why.
Cherry Death with Tonne and Perfect Teeth
Sunday, June 7
Blue Note Lounge | Oklahoma City
I accidentally wrote “Cheery Death” first, but that’s obviously incorrect (pretty cool name, though). The blossoming flower of a psychedelic noise-pop band is set to embark on a tour through the Midwest, but not before teaming with the Oxford Karma-approved Tonne and Perfect Teeth, who are way cooler than that dentist office in Denver that stole their name.
The Pizza Thieves with Cosmostanza and Trade School
Tuesday, June 9
Dope Chapel | Norman
The Pizza Thieves already have several ridiculously catchy garage-pop ditties to their name, yet the Norman-based trio (Italian meats trio?) is set to put out a cassette before a mini-tour with Cosmostanza. This kickoff/release show should be zesty, y’all.
The Cigarette Bums with Who and the Fucks and Trash Pops
Wednesday, June 10
Opolis | Norman
Nobody likes an actual cigarette bum, but L.A. punks The Cigarette Bums are pretty damn likeable. So are Tulsa’s Who and the Fucks (members of The Daddyo’s) and OKC’s Trash Pops, both of whom can lay claim to some the finest surf-pop you’ll find in a landlocked state.
