Kyle Roberts’ The Posthuman Project debuted at deadCENTER Film Festival last June to varying degrees of enthusiasm. Yet it didn’t take long for it to receive some post-human accolades, with the Oklahoma Film Critics Circle dubbing it the fest’s “Best Oklahoma Film.” Now, almost eight months after its premiere, it’s getting an official theatrical release.
Screening exclusively at AMC Quail Spring Mall 24, Posthuman opens Friday, Jan. 30 with several showings throughout the day and into the following week. You can view a full list of showtimes and purchase tickets on AMC’s website.
Proclaimed to have “the heart of a John Hughes film and the energy of X-Men,” Posthuman follows a group of soon-to-be high school graduates as they mysteriously attain superhero-like abilities. Here’s the official synopsis:
Denny Burke is finally about to graduate high school. Senior year has been one bad thing after another: a broken leg, a broken heart, and — worst of all — a broken home. With four of his closest friends, Denny goes on one last rock-climbing trip to prove he’s ready to start his adult life … On their trip the five teens receive a genetic boost beyond anything they’d ever imagined. Denny’s soon faced with the first big decision of his adult life: Does he give up these powers and stay a normal teenager, or does he keep them … and graduate from the human race?
Much of the effects-heavy film was produced at Freestyle Productions in Moore, utilizing the same state-of-the-art RED cameras used to shoot blockbuster flicks like The Amazing Spiderman and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Additionally, the soundtrack features a host of local heavyweights and was scored by Colin Nance and Steven Battles. The whole thing is about as Oklahoma as it gets.
As someone who’s seen the film, I can attest to its ambition. It’s definitely indie as hell, and you’re either going to love it or hate it. No middle ground here.
