Melissa Jacobs’ artwork is the best friend every girl wishes she had: snarky, silly, and sick of all the bullshit. Her upcoming show, Housewives, Hysterics, Witches and Bitches, showcases all of those well-worn stereotypes of women that seem to get reinvented once a week.
“All of these titles are names women are [called] when being put down,” Jacobs said. “But they are also titles women use to identify themselves — sometimes to be cute or funny and sometimes to be empowered.”
The presence and identity of women on social media are what inspired Jacobs’ latest collection. When she started paying attention to the representation of females on the internet, she noticed a trend.
“I tried to categorize these four types of ladies and represent them in my drawings and paintings,” she said.
In addition to the portraits of the ladies, Jacobs also painted murals on the walls of the gallery space. Although she found it challenging, she enjoyed the opportunity to try something new.
Jacobs is an avid supporter of women artists in Oklahoma and wants to see their influence grow.
“This show is dedicated to the women I know and love,” she said. “I want to help promote conversations between these women, encourage emotional, creative, and monetary support for them and to help find physical spaces for badass women I see and know in Oklahoma.”
