The Steve Reynolds Program
8 p.m. Saturday
Opolis | Norman
Somewhere between TED Talks and The Late Show for those with a flying phobia, The Steve Reynolds Program wasn’t necessarily a revolutionary idea, but it is a pretty brilliant one. It’s Oklahoma’s only live late-night talk show, spotlighting the talents of local musicians and comedians while chatting with some of the region’s most interesting people and weaving in sketches and more. A year ago, cheesemonger, comedian, and four-time Jeopardy champion Steve “Wampus” Reynolds started the production as a comedy showcase at Norman’s Opolis. The concept and content has evolved to where it is now, and the variety show of sorts celebrates its one-year anniversary with Saturday night’s incarnation, while Jay Leno plots a takeover from behind the curtain (probably).
It’s not your standard show of starlets and animal wranglers, showcasing a variety of voices from across the spectrum. Past guests have included Chainsaw Kitten Tyson Meade, author Lou Berney, ecologist Tom Ray, journalist Graham Lee Brewer, and May’s guest list doesn’t deviate from that cool and cultured formula, either. Choreographer and founder of Hartel Dance Group Austin Hartel (and members of his dance troupe) will be joined by documentarian Bradley Beesley and comedian Amanda Kerri. Josh Jones (of Evangelicals fame) will join in as musical guest, while Michael C. Hall (no, not that Michael C. Hall) and Harper Botoroff will warm up the crowd. Oh, and New Yorker writer Rivka Ricki Galchen will drop in via telephone.
Entry is a mere $5 at the door. Visit Opolis for more information.
