Oklahoma City has a fascination with the old made new. In all likelihood, your favorite taco shop, T-shirt store, or tattoo parlor lived another life as a gas station, cobbler’s studio, or pocket watch factory. That’s what the people at Provision Concepts did with two 10th and Broadway warehouses that had been vacant for nearly 25 years: Broadway 10 Bar & Chophouse opened earlier in 2015, and little brother Sidecar Barley & Wine Bar opened just over a week ago on April 29.
Packed because of the novelty? Sure, but I have a feeling Sidecar will quickly turn into a classic OKC hangout. The setup is something this city had lacked before this year; Sidecar features a roll-up garage door, so on nice days the patio seamlessly flows into the main space, the indoors and outdoors merging to create something unique to the area.
Though Sidecar is open for both lunch and dinner, the food menu is limited. But the libations are clearly the main event, with high-end labels like Johnnie Walker Blue and Macallan 25 included, as is wine on tap (hence the “Barley & Wine Bar” moniker, duh). I went for my go-to Old Fashioned, which was flawlessly made, and then opted to share the grilled cheese and hummus plate with a friend. I certainly had no complaint in terms of the hummus and pita, but the grilled cheese is where it’s at. Classic but with a bit of a twist, it was perfectly crispy and creamy and was also served with homemade chips and ketchup.
So it may not be the spot for a five-course meal, but it’s great a place to have a fun time and a tasty drink with excellent views. Get ready, because Sidecar is set to be OKC’s watering hole of the summer.
