Edmond-based producer Ethan Strange, aka Celadon City, has been relatively prolific with his Soundcloud output in the last year or so, dropping single after single while remixing the likes of Baths, Gold Panda, A.G. Cook, and Bon Iver. He’s also released three EPs in that span, and prior to that, he put out two full albums as PLSTKNOVA. And because he apparently does not sleep, Strange announced his fourth EP, All These Wonderful Things, which he’s set to release tomorrow.
First single “Your Wonderfalls” is vintage Celadon City, but it’s also Strange’s most subtly euphoric composition to date. Beginning with nothing but a delicately plucked string melody and some waterfall ambiance, the song erupts just past the halfway mark into a blissful, let-the-noise-wash-over-you sound collage. Strange manipulates the song’s seemingly straightforward hook with layer upon layer of distorted synths and pads, and he does so with an equal amount of exuberance and restraint that wouldn’t sound out of place on Ulrich Schnauss’s 2003 masterpiece A Strangely Isolated Place. It’s a song that finds Strange simultaneously adding to and refining his production technique, so much so that we can’t wait to hear the rest of All These Wonderful Feelings, which seems like an appropriate title at the moment.
Listen to the song below, and be sure to catch Celadon City and his Safari Collective mates at Oxford Karma’s Endless Summer on Aug. 29. Tickets can be purchased here.
