When it comes down to it, almost any song or album could be considered driving music. If you’re anything like us (God help you), odds are you equate certain styles or genres to a particular driving setting (road trip music, night-driving music, etc.), and depending on the individual, differents songs or styles might satiate that desire. But cruising music is something very specific, a particular subset of driving music that must meet a fixed criteria.
Rather than listing such criteria, allow me to direct you to the cruise-worthy new mix from Phoenix producer Vast Moyie and Oklahoma’s reigning Album of the Year champion Sardashhh. The duo met through Soundcloud last year, presumably through a shared affinity for lush instrumental music, and the pairing makes perfect sense. Chall Vihbz Assortment 1, their first collaboration, is packed to the brim with mid-tempo funk and jazz samples, skittish percussion, and an undeniable cruise-factor that’s ideal for rolled-down windows and sub-30 mph speeds. Much like its cover art, the 36-minute mix consists of two halves: Sardashhh for the first 18 (18:50 or so, to be precise), and Moyie — who is set to drop a new beat tape tonight through his Bandcamp — for the last.
Stream Chall Vihbz Assortment 1 or download it as an MP3 (so you can cruise while you listen) below. And when you’re done with that, check out our review of Sardashhh’s ok.keys mixtape, which he released back in April.
