What are your neighbors listening to? Oxford Karma decided to survey Oklahoma mainstay Guestroom Records about its best-selling records each week to figure out just that. Here’s what was flying off the shelves/out of the crates this week:
1. Tame Impala – Currents
2. Jason Isbell – Something More Than Free
3. Leon Bridges – Coming Home
4. Samantha Crain – Under Branch & Thorn & Tree
5. Ratatat – Magnifique
6. Frank Ocean – Channel Orange
7. Bjork – Vulnicura
8. Brand New – Deja Entendu
9. Zero 7 – Simple Things
10. Kacey Musgraves – Pageant Material
It was going to take a minor miracle to top Tame Impala in the opening week of their third studio LP, Currents, one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year from one of the biggest artists on the planet. The critically acclaimed (but publicly divisive) record lands at No. 1 as expected, though Jason Isbell put up a fight with his new album, Something More Than Free, just weeks removed from an evening crooning before crowds at Cain’s Ballroom. Leon Bridges, chart champ two weeks ago, recovers from No. 6 to No. 3 this week, followed closely by Samantha Crain (read last week’s interview with her and review of the new album, if you haven’t already) and Ratatat, who put out their first album since 2010 last week.
Nostalgia sweeps into the later part of the chart where Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange (2012), Brand New’s Deja Entendu (2003), and Zero 7’s Simple Things (2001) land at No. 6, 8, and 9, respectively. Bjork’s 2015 LP Vulnicura returns to the chart after an extended absence to reclaim a spot at No. 7, while Musgraves’ lauded country effort Pageant Material rounds out the list in the final slot.
