It’s some familiar but friendly faces that come through Oklahoma this week, including a pair of past NMF headliners, some local radio fixtures, and Oklahoma’s biggest country music festival filled with national and local favorites.
The Bright Light Social Hour
Friday, June 26
ACM @ UCO | Oklahoma City
Most of us know Bright Light Social Hour from headlining Norman Music Festival last year, and they’ve evolved nicely from the bro-jammy tendencies of their self-titled debut record into the psych-indebted, blues-rock-flavored sophomore LP, Space Is Still the Place, that came out earlier this year. Enjoy it in a more intimate setting and try to struggle to remember the NMF experience you were probably too drunk to remember.
Hayes Carll
Friday, June 26
Cain’s Ballroom | Tulsa
Speaking of past Norman Music Festival headliners, Texas folk troubadour Hayes Carll returns to Oklahoma after playing a Sooner Theatre gig earlier this spring. He hasn’t put out a new record since 2011’s modern classic KMAG YOYO, but he held a limerick contest for free tickets to this show in case you needed to remember how clever/awesome he is.
OKCFEST
Friday, June 26 – Saturday, June 27
Downtown OKC | Oklahoma City
No matter what, Oklahoma is always going to be country territory, and OKCFEST has worked to provide the state with a proper country music festival the last two years. This year’s field has expanded to include some rock-tailored acts (Grace Potter, Sammy Hagar & the Circle, Better Than Ezra, and Drive-By Truckers) next to the more traditional country radio offerings (Rascal Flatts, Hank Williams Jr., and The Voice-alum Corey Kent White).
Softaware with PVLMS with Soul Time with DJ Tom Hudson
Saturday, June 27
Blue Note | Oklahoma City
The Colin Nance-led Softaware teams with Norman electronic duo PVLMS and purveyor of funk Tom Hudson for some stellar bleep-bloopage and soul. Saturday night, y’all.
Guestroom Records / You’re Welcome Party
Saturday, June 27
Guestroom Records | Oklahoma City
Just as we did earlier this week, OK contributors Kellen McGugan and Beau Blackstock will be counting down their favorite albums of 2015 so far with a live, in-store recording of the 175th episode of their SpyFM broadcast You’re Welcome. Free drinks and great music abound.
The Appleseed Cast
Sunday, June 28
Opolis | Norman
Lawrence’s sorta indie, sorta emo The Appleseed Cast make their biannual trek down to Oklahoma. But this occasion is extra special, as it’s the 15th anniversary of their seminal sophomore LP, Mare Vitalis.
Cleanup with Headbutt and The Hitt Boyz
Tuesday, June 30
Dope Chapel | Norman
This math-rock bill adds up in all the right ways (rimshot). Dear God. What am I doing with my life?
