I don’t think they should call it May in Oklahoma. It should be Definitely, because there are no maybes about severe weather in the Sooner State this time of year. That tends to wreak havoc on concerts scheduled around the OKC metro, too — especially as of late. Mastodon/Clutch fans braved flash floods in order to attend, only to have the concert literally power down before the headliners could play. Melt-Banana gets to try and navigate through storms on Saturday to make it to Opolis, despite speaking very limited English. All of which to say, safety is of utmost importance — for fans, bands and venue operators — so be smart (and forgiving). Here’s what we have scheduled between now and Wednesday.
Kyle Reid EP Release Show with Sarah Reid
Friday, May 8
The Paramount | Oklahoma City
Not only is Kyle Reid a pretty damn good songwriter, he’s also inventive. For years, he’s been making cigar-box guitars, and now he’s releasing a full EP consisting solely of songs he created with the instrument he makes by hand. Sounds smokin’.
Melt-Banana with Shishio and Sex Snobs
Saturday, May 9
Opolis | Norman
Ironically enough, these guys aren’t huge in Japan. The cult favorite has a more dedicated following stateside and in Europe than they do in their native Tokyo. You won’t find them playing in Oklahoma very often, so take advantage of the chance. It might not come along again for quite some time.
Post Malone with Josh Sallee, B U R K E, and DJ Wayneindisthing
Saturday, May 9
Kamps | Oklahoma City
I’m still bitter that Post Malone left me hanging on my proposed Pre Stockton project. But the insane amount of ink in this week alone — with write-ups on Fader and Complex — has me coming along on the sensitive crooner and his breakout single “White Iverson.”
Hinder
Saturday, May 9
Sugar Creek Casino | Hinton
Hinder in Hinton sounds like the worst live album ever.
David Liebe Hart with Community Pools, Cameron Buchholtz, James Nghiem and BradChad Porter
Sunday, May 10
89th Street Collective | Oklahoma City
Who knows what to expect from Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! alum David Liebe Hart’s Sunday show in Oklahoma City? But that’s part of the fun. He’s a musician, puppeteer, artist, street performer and actor with a taste for all things bizarre. Bring your mom. We’re sure she’ll love it.
Psych Night with Paperhead, Heaters, Holy Wave, Psychotic Reaction and L.A. Witch
Monday, May 11
Opolis | Norman
4/20 came late this year. Really, this is a Levitation (formerly Austin Psych Fest) Spillover, featuring some the brightest names in psychedelia. El Paso’s Holy Wave made a buzzed-about appearance at Guestroom Records at Norman Music Festival 7, and the rest of the slate is nothing to giggle at.
