This week is the calm before the live-music storm, with a bevy of heavy hitters coming through the state next week along with a little thing called Norman Music Festival. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any great shows to check out, because there are. These are those shows.
Dad Rock Showcase with Regg, Limp Wizurdz, Trade School and more
8 p.m. Friday
Dope Chapel | Norman
Neither Regg, Limp Wizurdz, Trade School, Skeleton Museum or Quiet Things play what could be considered “dad rock,” but that won’t keep your dad from digging this eclectic group of young degenerates.
John Moreland with Porter
8 p.m. Friday
The Blue Door | Oklahoma City
If you haven’t heard John Moreland’s new album, High on Tulsa Heat, 1) What the hell are you doing? And 2) Go see the Tulsa singer-songwriter perform select cuts from the album live and in person, because the dude puts on an immensely potent show. Texas’ Chris Porter should should serve as the Austin Americana yin to Moreland’s heartland folk yang.
Dom Kennedy with Josh Sallee
7 p.m. Saturday
McCasland Fieldhouse | Norman
It’s not often that a West Coast hip-hop extraordinaire comes through town, and that’s what we’ll get when Dom Kennedy performs at the McCasland Fieldhouse at the University of Oklahoma. No word yet on his preferred guacamole recipe, but we’ll bring you those details as soon as we get them.
Kite Flying Robot with Softaware and Team Nightstand
10 p.m. Saturday
Blue Note Lounge | Oklahoma City
Kite Flying Robot’s Nikolas Thompson has been living in Seoul, South Korea the last few years, but that didn’t keep his OKC/Tulsa/San Francisco/Seoul-based band from dropping its second album, Magic and Mystery, earlier this year. Thompson returns Stateside for a one-off gig Saturday at the Blue Note, with Colin Nance’s Softaware and rising alt-pop duo Team Nighstand will support.
Sarah Reid with Kyle Reid and Nathan Lofties
8 p.m. Sunday
Breathing Rhythm Studio | Norman
The debut album from Norman composer and Magnificent Bird violinist Sarah Reid has been in the works a while now. She’ll finally drop that solo record Sunday, and we’re pretty stoked about it — especially with her brother Kyle Reid and Nathan Lofties in tow.
Stone Temple Pilots with Dreamers
8 p.m. Monday
Diamond Ballroom | Oklahoma City
If ’90s you dreamt of Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington fronting Stone Temple Pilots, well, there’s probably something wrong with you. But that’s the case now given former STP frontman Scott Weiland’s tumultuous battle with substance abuse. At least you’ll. Flies in the vaseline we are, indeed.
OK Go with White Arrows
8 p.m. Tuesday
Diamond Ballroom | Oklahoma City
They’re the guys who made that totally zany treadmill video.
