Oklahoma & Underground News
Around the region, there is no brighter star than Houston’s Sauce Walka. I’ve been inundated with the dripping of the Sauce and I’m very much here for it. The Sauce Twinz caught fire with their single “2 Legited 2 Quited” when Drake proclaimed on Instagram that he would be remixing the joint. The song hasn’t come out yet, but many other gems have since then, including a track with K. Camp titled “A Bag.” Sauce Walka is so energetic and infectious, it’s hard not to be an instant fan. One of the better local releases was Bryson Green’s video for “23rd.” I know Bryson is from here and spent a lot of time in Atlanta, and the influences are very evident. He’s quite musical and has a bit of a B.o.B. sound to his voice, but he is optimistically unique and a great sound for Oklahoma.
Jabee has role in an upcoming film and also hits the road this month and next on the Dope Deli Tour, so be sure to alert any hip-hop fans in the respective areas to catch the hometown kid. There were some excellent shows this month with JMSN, Future, and Waka Flocka all coming through. Josh Sallee brought Bobby Raps to Speakeasy and put on a hell of a show. It was one of the standout sets of the entire month and he lived up to his growing underground hype. Chatting with Retro Sush! after they opened for Future at the Farmers Market, Ceej (also of Two9 fame) mentioned how much fun he had in Oklahoma and enjoys coming here. I think if things like that can permeate across the hip-hop landscape, then we could see a lot of artists wanting to come through here and interact with the scene. That’s one of the steps to putting a local scene on the map, and by coming out to shows and supporting these acts, everyone can assist in building on the burgeoning culture here. I truly believe OKC can be one of the premiere markets for hip-hop in the Midwest and is well on its way.
Artist to Watch: D.R.A.M.
Why You Should Listen: I jammed his EP, 1EpicEP, and got the same exact feeling I had when I heard Kid Cudi’s debut mixtape. That’s not to say that they’re similar artists, but I felt he has a place in this industry and is infectiously catchy as well as uniquely talented with his quirky singing voice. But why you should really listen: Beyoncé is a fan.
Where To Start: “Cha Cha,” or the whole EP is really worth it. Standouts are “$” and “Mind Gone.”
Oklahoma Spotlight: DJ WayneInDisThang
Few people hustle harder than Wayne. He seemingly has eight events a week and manages to rock them all. His social media presence is booming and he’s emerging as one of the premier DJs in the state as well as the region. If you’re looking to push a record or get it heard in the clubs and shows around the state, he’s one of the first phone calls that you need to make. Rick Ross recently named he and DJ Keilo official Black Bottle Boys of MMG, which is one of the bigger endorsements Oklahoma has seen. Keep up with his ever-growing schedule and make sure you pay homage to the DJs; they’re incredibly important to the culture and we’re lucky enough to have some great ones like Wayne, Keilo, Dre, and many others.
