What are your neighbors listening to? Oxford Karma decided to survey Oklahoma mainstay Guestroom Records about its best-sellers each week to figure out just that. Here’s what was flying off the shelves/out of the crates this week:
1. Sufjan Stevens – Carrie & Lowell
2. Death Grips — The Powers The B
3. Death Cab for Cutie — Kintsugi
4. Godspeed You! Black Emperor — Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress
5. The Soft Moon — Deeper
6. Modest Mouse – Strangers to Ourselves
7. D’Angelo – Black Messiah
8. Kendrick Lamar – To Pimp a Butterfly
9. Purity Ring – Another Eternity
10. Courtney Barnett – Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit
Oklahomans have death on their minds. Sufjan Stevens nabs the top spot with Carrie & Lowell, an album inspired by the passing of his mother in 2012 that was recorded partially at Blackwatch Studios in Norman, while Death Grips and Death Cab for Cutie jostle their way into No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Canadian post-rock export Godspeed You! Black Emperor lands at No. 4 with its latest studio album (the first to completely feature material written after their 2010 reunion), while Captured Tracks signees The Soft Moon round out the top five with the project’s new Krautrock-inflected offering. You can catch the latter at Opolis on May 5.
The rest of the list are holdovers from last week. Courtney Barnett slides from the top spot to No. 10, while Modest Mouse, D’Angelo, Kendrick Lamar and Purity Ring continue their stronghold on the best-sellers list.
